One of our clients had an event where everyone had to bring a gift that somehow incorporated a 65 into it. Some people brought gifts inspired by the year 1965 (music, art, or movies). Others brought 65 of a favorite or funny items (such as cans of beer, or packages of prunes.) A couple guests made $65 donations to a charity in honor of the birthday celebrant.

As we advance in years, we often yearn to keep those memories of our younger years alive. Many of the ideas our professional party planners have shared with our clients include such things as:

• Find a way to incorporate the person's childhood into the celebration. Import a special gift, food item, or friend from their home-town.
• See if its possible to share a perspective on this person's life with the guests - after 65 years, the person has likely accumulated a great many friends, each with a special or funny story to share. Find as many pictures of the person from different years as possible to share to show the different fashions, jobs, or achievements in their lives.
• Take everyone back to that special time of their birth. People turning 65 were born just after the end of WWII, and America was in time of rapid change. Taking everyone back in time to those special, early years will make the guest of honor feel young again, and help their friends and family touch a bit of their history.
• Create a Social Security party. For many people, they start to take their Social Security benefits when they are 65. As a gag, have everyone bring something "social security" inspired as a gift such as a fake check, a fun card in the image of SS Card, etc.
